Three years ago, in 2020, many of us faced significant changes as we adjusted to the new normal following the emergence of COVID-19.
Numerous individuals grappled with the challenges of homeschooling and navigating hybrid work arrangements, leading to heightened stress levels.
For instance, a couple underwent significant hardships in 2020 when the wife had to leave her job to homeschool their three children. This decision resulted in a substantial decrease in the family’s income.
Previously, the couple had relied on their combined earnings to cover basic living expenses such as rent and bills. However, with the wife’s departure from work to care for their children, the family of five struggled to maintain stable housing. Consequently, they sought temporary accommodation with the husband’s mother while working to stabilize their financial situation.
Initially, the mother agreed to host the family in two bedrooms at her residence. However, she later retracted the offer upon discovering that the couple had been evicted and had no place to live.
As a result, the couple, now without a home, faced desperation as they searched for homeless shelters capable of accommodating them and their children. This search proved challenging as many families experienced similar homelessness due to pandemic-related circumstances.
With four months spent living in their van, the family eventually secured a place in a homeless shelter. However, the strained relationship with the mother-in-law persisted, as she maintained her distance.
The couple couldn’t help but feel resentful toward the mother-in-law for not extending a helping hand during their time of need. To exacerbate matters, the husband’s sister made them feel unwelcome when they requested to use her shower, despite their offers to pay for the privilege.
“We felt like we were treated as undesirable simply because we were over 30, had three kids, and were struggling,” the wife expressed. She was deeply frustrated and hurt by her sister-in-law’s behavior, especially given that the sister-in-law had inherited her home from their late father and had evaded tax payments for several years.
Despite the challenges, the couple remained determined to create a better life for their children. Through hard work and determination, they eventually established a stable living situation, securing regular employment and initiating their own business to increase their income. These efforts aimed to prevent them from experiencing homelessness again.
Transitioning from living in their van to achieving financial stability filled the couple with a sense of pride, particularly since they accomplished it without significant support from their families.
You know the saying, “what goes around comes around”? Well, that’s what happened here. The mother-in-law needed help, but her son and daughter-in-law didn’t want to give it. They remembered how she had treated them when they were in trouble.
The mother-in-law was having a tough time. She didn’t have much work and might lose her home. She asked her family for a place to stay, but they said no. They were still upset that she had let them struggle before. Although the mother-in-law sought solace from her daughter, the son and daughter-in-law stood their ground, suggesting a nursing home as an alternative. Despite facing criticism from their friends, public opinion largely supported the couple’s decision, suggesting the daughter take responsibility for her mother instead.
