An eight-year-old boy from Metro is facing severe challenges in his life after choking on a grape four years ago, leaving him unable to communicate and with minimal consciousness. Sincere Spann’s family is sharing their heartbreaking story to raise awareness about the potential dangers of serving young children grapes.
The incident occurred when Sincere was just four years old. While snacking on grapes at home, one got stuck in his throat, causing him to gasp for air. Immediate attempts were made by his mother’s aunt, Towanda Harris, to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Despite their efforts, Sincere’s brain was deprived of oxygen for four minutes, resulting in a traumatic brain injury that changed his life forever.
Despite numerous medical interventions, Sincere continues to face significant challenges. He is unable to walk, talk, or communicate effectively, and his level of consciousness remains minimal. With hopes of preventing similar tragedies, Sincere’s family is sharing his story and urging others to take their warning seriously.
Sincere’s journey has been difficult for his family. His mother, Jushaylian Spann, had to give up her job to become his full-time caregiver. Recently, she experienced another setback when she was involved in a car accident, resulting in the complete loss of her only vehicle, which she used to transport Sincere. In response, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated by Harris to raise funds for a handicap accessible van. The family has been overwhelmed by the support, with over $8,000 raised so far.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder for parents and caregivers to exercise caution when feeding young children foods like grapes, hot dogs, and popcorn. Such seemingly harmless items can pose a choking hazard, with potentially fatal consequences. It is essential to share this warning with everyone you know to help prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of our little ones.
