Aric Hutchinson and Samantha Miller’s wedding turned into a tragedy after they were hit by a drunk driver while leaving their reception on Folly Beach, South Carolina. The couple and two other passengers were riding in a street-legal cart when they were hit by a 25-year-old driver who was traveling at 65 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Samantha was killed, while Aric was hospitalized with serious injuries. Two other passengers were also injured. According to the Associated Press, the driver, Jamie Lee Komoroski, had consumed alcohol before the accident. She faces charges of reckless vehicular homicide and three counts of driving under the influence causing death. The results of the blood test are still pending. If found guilty, she could receive a prison sentence of up to 25 years for each DUI count.
The impact of the crash sent the golf cart flying about 100 yards, rolling multiple times before coming to a halt. Samantha was pronounced dead at the scene, still in her wedding dress, and Aric was transported to the hospital with broken bones and brain injuries. The other passengers also suffered injuries, and the family’s happiness turned into pain and loss.
Samantha’s mother, Lisa Miller, shared that Samantha had wished the night could last forever as it was the best night of her life. The bride’s mother had danced with her daughter earlier in the evening to Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are.” The family’s joyous celebration had quickly turned into a devastating nightmare.
Two GoFundMe campaigns have been set up to support the families of the victims. The campaign set up by Aric’s mother has raised nearly $600,000, while the second campaign, organized by Samantha’s sister, has raised almost $37,000. The tragic accident has left both families grieving for Samantha’s loss and hoping for Aric’s recovery.
Our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones.
