A high school senior has shattered the record for getting the most college admission offers in the United States.
Dennis Barnes, a senior at the International High School of New Orleans, has, as of this point, been extended scholarship offers from a total of 125 different educational institutions, amounting to $9 million. The previous high was $8.7 million, which was set in 2019.
The student, who is originally from New Orleans, sent applications to two hundred different schools and institutions throughout the United States.
“In August, I submitted college applications with the goal of raising the bar for college admissions.” “My mailbox was overflowing with decision letters and hundreds of scholarship offers,” Barnes recalled. And more and more letters are being received. It is his goal to have reached $10 million in scholarship offers by the end of April.
Acquiring scholarships is a challenging task, with only 7% of students receiving them, even though over 1 million scholarships are awarded annually. Typically, first-year students who are granted government scholarships and grants receive $13,690 each year.
Consequently, what Barnes accomplished is an exceptional achievement. Through hard work and dedication to his studies, he secured a groundbreaking number of scholarships. During his time in high school, he maintained a 4.98 GPA and held leadership positions in the National Honor Society. Additionally, Barnes is fluent in Spanish and has been recognized by the Institute Cervantes, representing Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports, as well as the Honorary Consul of Spain in New Orleans, for his outstanding command of the language.
Barnes intends to double major in computer science and criminal justice and will announce his college decision on May 2. He is set to graduate with his classmates in late May.
