Today, when you see dancers show off their abilities in dancing contests and on renowned TV shows, you know that they have undoubtedly practiced their routine for a long time before feeling confident enough to perform. One of the most well-known and recognizable dance routines ever to be immortalized on film, however, was unexpectedly not practiced at all.
The 1943 movie Stormy Weather, starring Bill Robinson and Lena Home, was well-liked at the time and is still somewhat well-liked now. The film’s most significant aspect had nothing to do with its two primary actors.
In a scene, brothers Harold and Favard Nicholas can be seen dancing and having fun to Jumpin’ Jive, a classic Cab Calloway song from the era. Thankfully, the videographer was recording as these two brothers began their acrobatic and utterly spectacular dance.
It should be noted that the scene depicted in the movie was shot in one take, and the choreography was not at all practiced. In the scenario, two brothers who obviously have a close affinity and a passion for dancing are proudly showcasing their talents.
Many people have acknowledged their unrehearsed scene from the film. For instance, famed dancer Fred Astaire remarked that it was the best dancing he had ever seen on film. The Library of Congress has also added the movie to the National Film Registry.
If you haven’t seen these brothers in action yet, get ready to be amazed by the video. Seven decades after the movie’s debut, their abilities are still astounding, just as they were when the brothers first performed the dance.
