One couple celebrates 70 years of marriage with a touching photo session in which the bride dons her original gown to honor the incredible achievement.
Melvin Lubbers is 91 years old, and Nancy Lubbers is 87. They first met in a skating rink when Nancy was only 16 years old, and they have been together ever since. Nancy wore a $35 outfit to the religious wedding she and her husband had in 1952.
Their youngest grandchild, Anna, requested photos of her grandparents with Nancy in her wedding gown on their 70th wedding anniversary. How unique!
Only a few pictures from my grandparents’ wedding day exist, Anna remarked. “I came up with the idea to shoot photos of Grandma in her dress and then my mom, Melissa, found Grandpa’s Korean War Army outfit for him to wear.”
Nancy regarded it as a wonderful idea and delighted at the opportunity to don her bridal gown.
I just maintained it and cherished it all these years because my dress was something special and I liked it, she said. We enjoyed reminiscing about our wedding day while wearing it again, and the photo shoot was a lot of fun.
Melvin remarked, “Oh yeah, it definitely brought back some pleasant memories.”
The couple has five children together, twelve grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren, and they reside in South Dakota. Here is what the couple responded when asked what their long and happy marriage’s secret was.
You won’t always agree; sometimes you will disagree, but when that happens, sit down and talk it out until you find a solution; then, after it’s settled, don’t bring it up again, Melvin said.
Even when you disagree, respect one another at all times, Nancy advised. Just try to live your life to the fullest.
