It’s incredible to think that Patrick Swayze, a great actor, passed away more than 12 years ago. Swayze, a star long before “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost,” will live on in our memories forever. Sadly, the actor lost his fight with pancreatic cancer on September 14, 2009, and sadly died. Lisa Niemi, his devoted wife of 34 years, was by his side the entire time.
The pair wed in 1975 after meeting when they were youngsters. This happened four years before Swayze made his screen debut in “Skatetown, USA,” a roller disco movie. Niemi, who is also a talented dancer, even co-starred with Swayze in the 2003 dance movie “One Last Dance,” which she also directed.
Despite their devotion to one another, Swayze and Niemi’s relationship had its ups and downs. This covered Swayze’s ascent to popularity and his ongoing battle with addiction. Nevertheless, the couple managed to survive.
In 2011, a few years after Swayze passed away, Niemi published her autobiography, “Worth Fighting For.” She talked extensively about their love for one another in it, even to the very end. In the book, Niemi describes her husband’s final comments to her as he was slipping into a coma.
Niemi awoke on a Monday to the sound of him breathing in little gasps. She claimed that the scene had a nearly infantile quality to it. She was aware that he needed to leave. That same day, he snuck out. Here’s their story:
Niemi Swayze, who was married to the actor for 34 years from 1975 until his death in 2009, spoke to Entertainment Tonight on how difficult it was to witness her husband’s battle with cancer:
“You have to battle for that person’s life every day, which is the worst thing you can experience. I am aware that he fought for his rights every day. Given the diagnosis, it was a miracle that he lived for 22 months.”
While he was battling pancreatic cancer, Swayze took on a position working on the series “The Beast,” claims Niemi. She claimed that while playing the part, he changed. He had been spending most of his time in bed, but being in Chicago gave him a wonderful jolt of energy.
“He had this huge surge of energy that knocked me out. Like before, he was always moving forward and taking charge. Pat came back to me. He occasionally even displayed “star” behavior, which always drove me nuts because it involved making ridiculous demands at the last minute and suddenly becoming the undisputed expert on everything in the universe “According to Niemi’s autobiography.
She added that Swayze never desired an easier work simply because he had been given a cancer diagnosis. He insisted on doing something instead of the paid stuntman, even when his character was supposed to jump over a wall. Despite having a diagnosis, Swayze, according to Niemi, felt stronger and happier while working on the set of the show. Swayze passed away on September 14, 2009, from pancreatic cancer, just under two years after receiving his original diagnosis.
In her autobiography, Niemi described the moment she lost the love of her life and shared their last exchange of words:
“”I love you,” was my final message to Patrick, and they were his final words to me. Things moved quickly once I brought him home.”
After spending some time grieving, Niemi wrote her book, which helped to carry on Swayze’s legacy even after he passed away. Additionally, Niemi joined together with Swayze’s co-stars and friends to make the documentary “I Am Patrick Swayze,” which is about his life. On August 18, 2019, the late actor’s birthday and the ten-year anniversary of his passing, it was released.
Niemi discussed her time with Buddy, the nickname she gave her late spouse, in the documentary. She described how she entered the stage decades ago and met his gaze. It was genuine affection from the beginning.
But the film isn’t only about his victories. In-depth examination of his alcohol consumption is also included. He would be jovial and upbeat up until he was by himself, according to Niemi. Then he would crash, straining and complicating their relationship. Niemi still loved him despite the numerous difficulties they faced throughout their marriage.
Fans of the attractive star are still eager to learn everything there is to know about the legendary actor more than 12 years after his passing. According to the tales told by those who knew him well, he certainly had a kind heart.
