There are still a lot of wonderful things happening in the world every day, and there aren’t many greater examples than this touching story from Australia. A golden retriever had rescued an abandoned young koala’s life by keeping him warm with her fur on a cold winter night. Many people, including her owners, were blown away by her performance.
Kerry McKinnon and her husband awoke to find an unexpected visitor in their Strathdownie, Western Victoria, Australia home that morning. It wasn’t their golden dog Asha who was snuggling in her fur; it was a little koala.
There’s no denying that the pair was taken aback.
Asha did appear a little guilty after seeing their reaction, but she insisted on carrying the baby on her back, as Kerry mentioned.
The young koala was feeling the same way. He refused to leave Asha after he had made himself at home.
He growled at them when they took the koala away to wrap him in a blanket.
Nobody understood what brought the strange pair together, but it’s safe to assume Asha picked up the young koala on the street and carried him home with her. Perhaps the unfortunate bear was separated from his mother unexpectedly.
The temperature in Australia can drop to 5C (41F) during the winter evenings, and without a heavy fur coat, it would be difficult to survive, especially for a tiny baby like that.
The koala was later evaluated by a veterinarian, who confirmed she was in perfect health. Kerry also contacted the local koala caretaker, who agreed to take him away for better treatment. The newborn koala will hopefully be allowed to return to the wild as soon as possible.
