In Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, a small Shih Tzu had a scary incident, but everything came out fine thanks to the kindness of a stranger.
Mel, the small dog, and her family share a 9th-floor apartment.
She was out on the balcony one day, having fun when she decided to climb onto the railing.
Mel recognized she’d made a mistake right away. She couldn’t get back down on the balcony, and a 100-foot drop awaited her on the other side of the railing.
The terrified puppy was at a loss for what to do.
Then, all of a sudden, she slipped. Her tiny form rushed through the air, crashing on the hard ground below.
Mel had to have thought she was going to die. She had no idea that a concerned bystander was attempting to save her.
Joao Augusto was strolling down the street when he noticed a barking dog caught on a nine-story-high barrier.
He became scared for the pup’s life almost immediately.
He saw the poor puppy was on the verge of collapsing.
Then she did it.
Augusto had positioned himself so that he could catch Mel as soon as he’d spotted her.
He’d hoped to have enough time to get a sheet or towel from the building management to use as a stretcher to catch her in, but there wasn’t enough time in the end.
Augusto only had to prepare himself, extend out his arms, and do his best when Mel came tumbling through the air.
Augusto stepped at exactly the correct spot to stop Mel’s fall, much to everyone’s relief.
He was knocked to the ground by the impact, but he was unconcerned because Mel was still alive. Augusto admitted in an interview that he needed to lie down on the ground for a second to catch his breath and recover from such a tight situation.
Little Mel survived the fall thanks to this hero, and we’re confident she’ll remember him forever.
