If you’re a cat lover or a photographer, this is your dream come true!! Houtong Cat Village is one of the world’s few cat communities with a group of tamed cats.
Houtong used to be a well-known mining community in Taiwan’s Ruifang District. It was one of Taiwan’s largest coal-mining sites until the 1970s.
When the mining industry began to decline, many people left Houtong and moved to other cities, leaving only a few individuals remaining.
Only in 2008 did a group of residents in the village begin to raise awareness about the cats in Houtong and work to improve their living conditions.
Surprisingly, other cat lovers and local bloggers were really enthusiastic about our effort.
Houtong is currently one of northern Taiwan’s most well-known villages, thanks to all of the attention.
Houtong’s cats are remarkably friendly, despite the fact that they are frequently chased, caressed, and photographed by visitors.
Cat food and biscuits are available in various village shops, but feeding is discouraged; if you must, only two or three tiny biscuits per cat are recommended.
Signs have been placed across the hamlet asking people not to feed, tease, or photograph the cats with flash photography.
Some cats enjoy being petted, while others flee at the sight of an outstretched hand.
The most considerate thing to do is to admire the cats from afar and only play with them if they approach you.
The quickest and most convenient method to get here is to take the train from Taipei Station.
Take the Yilan line to Su’ao (the most common terminal) and get off in Houtong about an hour later.
Whether you’re traveling alone, with friends or family, or on a romantic trip, Houtong is a great place to visit.
Houtong is also an excellent place to unwind, as it is nestled between hills and mountains and is home to a plethora of adorable cats. So, what are you waiting for? Take a trip to Taiwan.
