This Columbia farmer thought he was assisting a stray kitten when, in reality, he was saving the life of a wild cat. Elber Guzman was riding his motorcycle when he saw the tiny creature on the side of the road and immediately rushed up to aid it. However, after a few days, he discovered that the tiny cat he had saved was actually a newborn cougar!
Guzman’s main thought was to help because there were so many abandoned animals in that section of the country. So when he saw the scared kitten, he scooped it up and carried it to his house, where he cared for and fed it. He soon recognized, though, that the tiny creature wasn’t acting like a typical cat.
“I picked him up on the road, he looked exactly like a cat, and I thought to myself, poor little animal, he must be lost in this lonely location, I better take him home,” the kind farmer explained. “I took a close look at him and was suspicious since he had a long tail and round ears. Furthermore, his behavior was not identical to that of domesticated cats.”
Guzman contacted the Tolima Regional Autonomous Corporation, the country’s environmental agency, and they sent someone to check on the rescue ‘kitty.’ The tiny animal the farmer saved turned out to be a cougar, not a domestic cat. The wild animal was about two months old and had a medical problem that was worsening due to starvation.
The baby cougar was transferred to Ibagué’s Center of Attention and Valuation of Wild Fauna, where he will be kept until he is fully recovered. A helpless newborn animal was given a second chance because to the goodwill of this farmer!
