Do you know how you always come home with more than you left with when you travel? After a recent trip to Mexico, this happened to a PETA employee. The PETA representative flew down to a little town a few hours outside of Cancun to assist with a spay/neuter event—and returned with an extra 8 pounds. That’s 8 pounds of the cutest, most aww-inducing adorableness you’ve ever seen. We triple dog dare you not to smile when you see this face:

The PETA volunteer who rescued her gave her the name Carmen. And, like the opera of the same name by Georges Bizet, it was clear that the 3-month-old puppy’s brief life had already been full of drama.

Millions of dogs live on the streets in Mexico, where the overabundance of companion animals is a serious problem.

Carmen had ticks and internal parasites, and her fearfulness revealed that the small hound mix hadn’t had many positive human experiences. Our worker, on the other hand, was eager to show her that humans can be friendly and that they can even be family.

Carmen was given healthy food and TLC at PETA’s shelter in Norfolk, Virginia, before being placed in a foster home.

She was quickly on her way to being a “foster fail,” as her foster family adopted her after she developed an instant bond with their two young children.

But it was her quick relationship with their rescued Australian shepherd mix that sealed the deal. When Carmen naps in her favorite blanket, pictures of teddy bears, cuddles, and doggie playdates dance in her head.
