A cat that had been missing for 12 years has been found over 230 miles from its home.
Georgie, 15, had been living on a campsite near Loch Lomond for a year that was about to close when Cats Protection in Glasgow was notified.
However, rescuers were perplexed when they discovered the moggy’s microchip was linked to an address in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, hundreds of miles away.
Georgie’s owners were eventually found after a desperate search across the UK. They revealed their pet cat had been missing since 2008.
The cat had vanished while the family was on a camping trip in the north, and rescuers said her existence over the previous decade would “forever remain a mystery.”
According to Glasgow Cats Protection, “Georgie was adopted as a kitten by her family, and she began going camping with them when she was 12 weeks old, starting out on a leash.
“She eventually wandered the grounds of where they were staying and always returned without a hitch.
“Her owner had a baby twelve years ago, and Georgie didn’t like it, so when they came up here to Loch Lomond on a camping vacation in October 2008, Georgie vanished and never returned.”
“Where she’s been for the previous 12 years may never be known, but she’s still very friendly, so I’m guessing she’s been around humans.”
Georgie’s bewildered family has opted not to take her home, and she will be rehomed.
“Her family was understandably startled to learn that Georgie had been located 12 years later, and while their heart is begging them to travel up to Glasgow right now to get her, we all know it’s not the right thing for Georgie,” rescuers continued.
“It wouldn’t work since her family got another cat nine years ago who doesn’t like other cats, and we assume Georgie doesn’t like other cats either, so it wouldn’t work and she’d have to travel a long way home only to find out what we already know.
“As a result, Georgie will be looked after by us until we are able to find her a new loving home.
