After her owners abandoned her, a cat has been returning to the same area in Russia for a year and has become an internet phenomenon. The lonely kitty was initially spotted on a manhole cover in Belgorod, in the Belgorod Oblast region of south-western Russia, in 2015.
Since then, the cat has reportedly returned to the same location every day, evidently waiting for its owners to return.
The story of the abandoned cat was shared by Ostap Zadunayskiy.
He stated he discovered the cat’s original owners used to reside nearby but had sold their apartment and moved away.
Locals told him that they had seen the cat chasing after its owners as they left, but that they had never returned. They claimed she has been waiting at the same location since then.
‘This is a beautiful example of human meanness and pure animal loyalty,’ Mr Zadunayskiy said.
He also commended the many residents who have continued to feed the cat throughout the years.
Many Internet commentators referenced from Antoine de Saint-book Exupery’s The Little Prince, which says, “You become forever accountable for what you’ve tamed.”
Many people, however, were skeptical about the narrative, claiming that the cat was merely there to be fed every day.
