When Jessica Leatherman’s 7-year-old daughter started first grade this year, she began riding the school bus for the first time. She, on the other hand, does not stand alone at the bus stop.
Craig, the family’s rescue cat, is in responsibility of making sure she gets to and from school in the same condition.
Leatherman came across the black and white cat at an adoption event in 2019 and decided to take him home with him. Craig joined the family after spending eight and a half months in the rescue centre. He was immediately accepted by the members of the family.
“He’s a fairly laid-back boy”. In an interview with The Dodo, Leatherman said, “I don’t believe there is anything that may wake him up – thunder and lightning may stir him up. When he wakes up, he’s like a clown. He likes knocking things off counters in order to catch your attention”.
Craig has a special relationship with Leatherman’s daughter, and her new daily routine piqued his interest. When she went for the bus, he continued going to the door and meowing, so Leatherman decided to open the door so the cat could watch her daughter leave.
“Since the bus stops right in front of our home, I figured I’d invite him out,” Leatherman stated. “But he chose her over me, and he followed her down the sidewalk and driveway, where he remained the whole time she waited for the bus.”
“I thought, “Is he really doing this?” I expected him to come to me as soon as she got on, but he stayed and watched the bus go away. He won’t go until the bus is out of sight.”
Craig dropping off his sister at the bus stop is now part of their morning routine, which Leatherman takes extremely seriously.
And the rescue cat always greets Leatherman’s daughter after school. The two are “as one,” Leatherman said. “He’ll sit next to her and purr all over her. It’s the cutest thing.”
“If he’s awake, he’ll follow her around the house, almost as if protecting her.”
