Brutus is a 3-year-old Bullmastiff who lives with his family, the Michaleks, in Northern California. According to Bonnie Michalek, he is the family’s firstborn child. Brutus is actually a very friendly and playful dog, despite his rough exterior, but Bonnie and her husband were concerned about how Brutus would respond if they became pregnant with their first kid. Brutus is a big kid who loves to play with them in the park and always takes their attention when he sees them, but he’s also used to being the only child, so they weren’t sure how he’d react to the new addition to the family.
Bonnie’s pregnancy was detected by Brutus before the pair even realized it. Brutus would leave Bonnie’s side on evenings while her husband was at work. Brutus would not stay in his crate until Bonnie’s husband returned home, no matter how comfy Bonnie made his crate or enticed him with treats. When Bonnie gave birth to Kayden nine months later, the Michaleks made certain that Brutus was present.
While Bonnie’s parents were bringing the baby home, Brutus stayed at Bonnie’s parents’ house. Bonnie made sure to pay special care to Brutus when they picked him up before introducing him to the new baby. When Brutus was finally permitted to meet Kayden, he went straight to kissing and cuddling the baby. Then and there, a special bond blossomed. Brutus has taken on the roles of nanny and protector for Kayden, bringing him his battered fluffball whenever he cries.
When it was time to introduce Brutus to the newborn, he kissed and cuddled him right away. It was love at first sight for both of them.

Although this brilliant yellow fluffball appears to be filthy and disgusting, it is Brutus’ favorite toy.

How cute is that?
Brutus and Baby Kayden now work together on everything. All day is spent playing, eating, sleeping, and having fun.
