Bart the cat is happy, healthy, and — as far as we know — not a zombie! A year after miraculously rising from the grave, Bart the cat is happy, healthy, and — as far as we know — not a zombie!
In addition, he’s the subject of a bitter custody fight between the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and his human, Ellis Huston.
Last January, Huston buried Bart in his Tampa Bay, Florida, backyard after he had been hit by a car and appeared to be dead, in a scene right out of Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary.”
The cat clawed his way out of the grave five days later and appeared in a neighbor’s yard.
Bart suffered horrific face wounds, a broken jaw, and a “dead” eye that had to be removed, but the cat is now doing well, albeit a little overweight, according to Humane Society Director Sherry Silk.
In a recent Facebook update, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay shared a photo of the black-and-white feline sporting a colorful New Year’s hat, which was taken at the cat’s recent check-up.
Bart is currently in a foster home with two other cats as the Humane Society and Huston argue over who gets to keep the cat.
Huston was aware the cat was still alive when he buried his pet, according to Silk, something the owner categorically rejects.
“He might not have been dead. ‘Cause, when I saw him…he was moving and all,” a woman’s voice can be heard saying in a YouTube video recorded by Huston’s neighbor, Dusty Albritton, showing Bart shortly after he returned from the dead.
They also argue about how long it took Huston to seek medical help for Bart when he resurfaced, and Silk is concerned about Huston’s capacity to adequately care for Bart’s specific requirements.
Silk believes that if the Humane Society wins possession of Bart, he will be offered for adoption by a suitable family.
