After being abandoned outside the Franklin County Animal Shelter in Farmington, a cat was found inside a vacuum box on Thursday.
“When we opened the door to walk a staff member’s dog, we discovered a vacuum box on our front step with holes poked through (hopefully before the box was glued shut with a kitten inside),” the Franklin County Animal Shelter wrote on Facebook.
It was about 31 degrees outside, according to the shelter, and they don’t know how long the cat had been there.
The cat was described as “beyond scared.”
“Once the tape was peeled back, it flew out of the box and circled the office many times before we were able to grab him,” the shelter continued.
The shelter understands that some people’s situations are so desperate that they are unable to maintain their pets; however, they would want to urge Mainers to use their town’s animal control officer to surrender animals or turn in stray animals.
“Please speak with us if the ACO is unable to assist for whatever reason — we will ALWAYS be willing to work with you to ensure the cat’s well-being,” the shelter suggested. Also, during our closed but staffed hours, we have a doorbell that works really effectively for grabbing our attention.”
