Cats have a greater body temperature (102°) than humans since they are desert species that evolved in the Middle East and have a strong tolerance for heat. They have a fast metabolism and use a lot of energy to stay warm. That’s why they’ll lay down in the sun if they can since it conserves their energy and counteracts the reduction in basal metabolism caused by sleep shutting down certain processes in the body. That metabolic heat advantage is precisely why they need light – or warmth – and would put themselves in the most inconvenient places to get it.
