Andrew Marttila is a gifted pet photographer who is most recognized for his adorable cat photographs. Andrew used to be allergic to cats, but now he admits to being a “mad cat guy.”
Andrew has lately been working on a research examining how cats respond to catnip. Andrew offers a collection of photographs of cats and kittens tripping out on catnip in his new book, “Cats On Catnip.”
So, what is catnip, exactly? It’s a herb that belongs to the mint family.
Catnip includes an essential oil called nepetalactone, which is the portion of the plant that drives cats insane. While not every cat will react to catnip, most will smell it, rub their chins, necks, and bodies, eat it, and shake it.
Cats are generally energetic at first, but as the “high” wears off, they begin to relax. However, each cat is unique, and some cats may turn violent after being exposed to catnip.
Andrew’s book depicts the behaviors of a variety of cats, including Fluffy, who goes insane from catnip, and Mittens, who masters acrobatics. Scroll down to see more of Andrew’s beautiful photographs.
