A cat obsession: when and where it began…

Cat obsession is not a recent phenomenon. People who own cameras have cherished the opportunity to photograph their cats since the invention of photography. Despite the fact that cats are known for being independent and aloof, they are still willing to pose for photographs with their owners in order to capture those priceless moments.

Cat obsession has reached new heights in recent years, thanks to the internet, but we want to take a look back at the origins of cat obsession. Keeping this in mind, we would like to share with you a wonderful collection of vintage portraits of women and their feline companions.

Alice Maddicott, a writer, educator, and artist originally from Somerset, England, was the inspiration behind this collection. The author of Cat Women: An Exploration of Feline Friendships and Lingering Superstitions, she has written several books. Alice wants to demonstrate to everyone, through the use of these vintage photographs, the strong bond that exists between people and their cats.

The moment Alice was hit with a thud of love that she’d never imagined a creature could produce, she became known as a cat woman. “I never imagined myself as a cat lady, but now that I think about it, the strangest thing about it is that it is something that anyone can become.”

Take a look at the photos below and enjoy! To be honest, the cats of the past were also very cute and lovely to look at.
