On his way to work one morning, Mathieu Patry of Quebec, Canada, came across a little critter that looked like a kitten. As he came closer, he was taken aback by what he found.
Mathieu was walking through the woods when he came across the small fuzzy creature on the side of the path.
“At first, I mistook it for a kitten. So I approached it to get a better look, and that’s when I noticed the large paws and wide ears”, Mathieu explained in the interview.
These distinguishing characteristics suggested that this feline was not a domestic cat but rather a wild animal who had become separated from his mother. “I recognized it was a Canadian Lynx.”, added Mathieu.
He was unsure whether the mother Lynx was close or whether the baby had been abandoned, so he opted to leave the Lynx where he was in the hopes that the mother would return for him. He went about his business, but he couldn’t get the Lynx out of his head.
In the interview, he said, “I went back the next day to see if he was still there, and I could hear his cries from afar.”
Mathieu waited a little longer before deciding to take action. He was scared the Lynx kitten wouldn’t be able to survive on his own. “The mother must have abandoned him because he was weak”.
He discovered the Lynx near a tree, picked him up, and carried him back to his house. “I sought assistance from a wildlife rehabber at a nearby zoo,” Mathieu said.
He was given instructions to feed and care for the Lynx for the day after contacting the specialists.
At night, Mathieu kept a tight eye on the young one to make sure he was okay.
“I took him to the zoo the next day,” Mathieu explained.
The Lynx turned out to be fairly young and wouldn’t have survived much longer on his own. The Lynx is back on track and performing admirably thanks to the rehabbers’ assistance. He’ll be released back into the wild once he’s ready.
